Clovis is a “Community for Family,” and with that comes the city’s goals of providing quality municipal services in the best, most effective and economical manner to the people who call this community home.

A mayor and an eight-member commission, who are elected to serve four-year terms by Clovis citizens, oversee local government operations. A city manager serves as the chief administrator to ensure the city is managed in an efficient, cost-effective manner. Clovis operates on a budget of approximately $50 million.

The City of Clovis owns Colonial Park Golf Course (1300 Colonial Parkway) – an 18-hole course that consists of a driving range, pro shop, banquet room and restaurant.

The Clovis-Carver Public Library (701 N. Main Street, www.library.cityofclovis.org) provides a comprehensive library, e-books and Internet services. Recreational and park facilities include the beautiful Hillcrest Park which is home to the Clovis Aquatic Center, Splash Pad, dog parks, soccer complex, Joe and Charlene Sisler Youth Recreation Building (YRB), the Hillcrest Park Zoo and Sunken Gardens. The north end of the park also contains soccer, football, softball and baseball facilities.

Roy Walker Recreation Center (316 W. Second Street) offers a 19,269-square foot facility that holds two full-size gymnasiums, a boxing gym, weight room and youth activity room.

Activities for seniors are offered at the Baxter-Curren Senior and Friendship Centers, including breakfasts, full lunches, activities and trips to other communities.

The Clovis Area Transit System (CATS) provides on demand transportation for Clovis citizens at low rates throughout the city.

The Clovis Police Department has 61 sworn officers and 30 support staff, who provide law enforcement and communication services to the community. With a Special Response Team, K-9, Narcotics Task Force, Animal Control, enhanced 911 area-wide direct communications and professional computer- aided dispatch, the goal is to provide professional law enforcement, quality animal control and emergency communications services to the community.

Clovis Fire Department’s mission is to provide a range of services designed to protect the lives and property of the citizens of Clovis and Curry County from adverse effects of fires, sudden medical emergencies or exposure to dangerous conditions created by either man or nature. The Clovis Fire Department strives for excellence in the delivery of fire suppression, emergency medical service, fire prevention and public education. The Clovis Fire Department achieves this goal by being innovative in their thinking and effective in their actions while working safely in all conditions.

Most recently, the Clovis Fire Department added a burn building training facility to help firefighters gain valuable training. The Clovis Fire Department is comprised of 79 full-time employees providing professional and courteous services from six fire stations located throughout the city and one at the aiprort.

The Clovis Fire Department currently provides a Class III ISO fire protection rating for the city. The Clovis Fire Department recognizes that the community is entitled to outstanding service and is committed to protecting its citizens.

Portales, New Mexico, is the county seat and business hub for Roosevelt County and a retail trade area of 23,675. Portales is an historic town with its roots in the territorial days of New Mexico that blends the past with modern developments to create a unique place to live. This community provides an exceptional quality of life and a safe area for families. Portales is located on the high plains of eastern New Mexico, in the heart of a major agricultural region. Farming, ranching and the dairy industry are all important components of the community’s economic base. Agriculture is the major industry of Roosevelt County. The leading crops are peanuts, cotton, wheat, corn, sorghum and hay, with a growing niche market for chile. Livestock feeding and dairy farming are also important to the local economy. Industrial enterprises include soft drink canners, an ethanol production facility, grain storage and shipping, trucking and milk processing.

With a population over 12,500, Portales is also home to numerous families associated with Cannon Air Force Base, which is located 11 miles northeast of the city. The Special Operations base adds a very important dimension to the community’s economy and available labor force and a community pride in our military.

Eastern New Mexico University is the third-largest university in New Mexico with a growing enrollment of over 5,000 in 2011. The four-year college offers more than 50 areas of undergraduate studies and 15 majors for master’s degrees. The campus, which spans more than 400 acres, offers a tree-studded landscape with many historic buildings and sites.
